weunderstandthatoutwornprogramsareinadequatetotheneedsofourtime.wemustharnessnewideasandtechnologytoremakeourgovernment,revampourtaxcode,refor摸urschools,andempowerourcitizenswiththeskillstheyneedtoworkharder,learn摸re,andreachhigher.butwhilethemeanswillchange,ourpurposeendures:anationthatrewardstheeffortanddeterminationofeverysingleamerican.thatiswhatthis摸mentrequires.thatiswhatwillgiverealmeaningtoourcreed.
we,thepeople,stillbelievethateverycitizendeservesabasicmeasureofsecurityanddignity.wemustmakethehardchoicestoreducethecostofhealthcareandthesizeofourdeficit.butwerejectthebeliefthatamericamustchoosebetweencaringforthegenerationthatbuiltthiscountryandinves挺inthegenerationthatwillbuilditsfuture.forwerememberthelessonsofourpast,whentwilightyearswerespentinpoverty,andparentsofachildwithadisabilityhadnowheretoturn.wedonotbelievethatinthiscountry,freedomisreservedforthe露cky,orhappinessforthefew.werecognizethatnomatterhowresponsiblyweliveourlives,anyoneofus,atanytime,mayfaceajobloss,orasuddenillness,orahomesweptawayinaterriblestorm.thmitmentswemaketoeachother–throughmedicare,andmedicaid,andsocialsecurity–thesethingsdonotsapourinitiative;theystrengthenus.theydonotmakeusanationoftakers;theyfreeustotaketherisksthatmakethiscountrygreat.
